WASH
This World Water Day 2025, Alkhidmat is Preparing for the Most Vulnerable and Unforeseen

According to the United Nations, over 2 billion people globally live in countries experiencing high water stress, with millions lacking access to clean, safe water.

Every year on March 22, people around the world come together to observe World Water Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of water, advocating for sustainable water management practices, and reflecting on the global water crisis.

Water connects every aspect of life.  Access to safe water and sanitation can quickly turn problems into potential – empowering people with time for school and work, and contributing to improved health for women, children, and families around the world. UNESCO

What is theme of World Water Day 2025

Each year, UN-Water - the UN coordination body for water and sanitation - sets the theme for World Water Day.

This year, the United Nations theme for World Water Day is "Glacier Preservation", highlighting the urgent need to protect these natural water sources and ensure a sustainable future.

The Impact of Water Scarcity on Vulnerable Communities

More than 1 million people die each year from lack of access to safe water and sanitation, and every 2 minute a child dies from illness and disease. It means reduced child and mortality rates. It means improved hygiene, privacy, and safety for women and girls. Now more than ever, access to safe water is critical to the health of families around the world. WHO

Communities hard hit by Israeli airstrikes

Israeli airstrikes have destroyed or damaged approximately 70% of water and sanitation facilities, including sewage pumps and wastewater treatment plants. This destruction has left nearly the entire population without reliable access to clean water.

Over the past few years, the world has experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as it has been shaken by major disruptive events and unprecedented crises.

This World Water Day, it is more important than ever to take a moment to reflect on the impact of these events on the global water reservoirs.

Examples include most recently the war in Gaza putting an end to more than 49,547 of lives have affected 112,719 people and displaced thousands. Gaza's water crisis has reached catastrophic levels, exacerbated by ongoing conflict and infrastructure destruction. Before the recent escalation, Gaza's water system was already strained, with over-pumping and seawater intrusion rendering less than 5% of the water from its sole aquifer safe for consumption.

International organizations have condemned the use of water as a weapon of war, highlighting that the deliberate targeting of water infrastructure violates international humanitarian law. The destruction ofthese facilities has plunged Gaza into a severe humanitarian crisis, with access to clean water being a critical concern.

Today, 202 billion people -1 in 4- lack access to safe water and 3.5 billion people -2 in 5- lack access to a safe toilet. These are the people we help empower. WHO Understanding the Human Right to Water

It is easy to understand how important it is to get the necessary amount of water to survive, but what about people who do not have access to safe drinking water? What about their needs?  World Water Day is a chance to raise awareness and funds for clean water and sanitation projects throughout the world.  We encourage you to learn about the crisis and what you can do to help in anticipation of World Water Day 2025!

Challenges faced from lack of clean water

  • 2 billion people across the world lack access to safe drinking water
  • 3.5 million people die each year due to water related diseases.
  • 1 in 5 children across the globe do not have enough water.
  • women and girls spend 200 million hours every day collecting water
  • every 2 minutes a child dies from a water or sanitation related disease
  • 209% of schools lack access to basic water and sanitation.

Understanding the Human Right to Water

The human right to water might seem like a given, but it’s a relatively new concept in the realm of international law.

It was only in 2010 that the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation, affirming that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights.

The resolution calls upon states and international organizations to provide financial resources, build capacity and transfer technology, particularly to developing countries, to scale up efforts to provide safe, clean, accessible, and affordable drinking water and sanitation.

Sustainable Water Solutions

$260 is lost globally each year due to lack of basic water and sanitation. WHO

A central aim of World Water Day is to support the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.
  • Water Conservation
  • Improved Water Infrastructure
  •  Water Pollution Prevention
  • Promoting Education and Awareness
  • Climate Resilience

International Aid and Solutions:

While international organizations, such as the United Nations and various NGOs, have been working to provide aid and temporary solutions (like providing bottled water or building desalination plants), these efforts are often not enough to address the scale of the crisis or provide long-term solutions. Desalination plants, for example, require large amounts of electricity, which Gaza has limited access to.

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan has extended its humanitarian efforts to Palestine, focusing on providing clean water and installing water pumps to support communities in need. In Gaza Alkhidmat has initiated projects to supply clean water to local families, aiming to improve living conditions and health standards.

How Alkhidmat’s Sustainable Water Solutions address Gaza Water Scarcity

This year for World Water Day, Alkhidmat Foundation is campaigning for Rebuild Gaza Project. We hope to raise a total of PKR 1,00,000,000 in zakat where we will match the first 49,351,663.62 raised. The campaign includes reconstructing 100 water projects to provide safe and clean drinking water to Palestinian families. And to keep the project sustainable, 46 mechanics will be trained to keep the wells working for the community and provide them with a source of income.

When we build a water system, we ensure communities have a sustainable source of clean water for years to come. We recognize the risk of drought, displacement, and disease and with over thirty years of expertise we know that simply drilling wells and installing water pumps cannot solve the water crisis.

Alkhidmat Foundation's WASH Program (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) is committed to addressing this issue by providing sustainable water solutions for communities in need.

How Alkhidmat Prioritize Vulnerable Population

Through our community-based approach, we prioritize the most vulnerable populations, such as women and children, who are disproportionately affected by waterborne illnesses. Our efforts have resulted in a significant reduction in the incidence of waterborne illnesses, leading to a decrease in child mortality and improved community health in rural areas.

Alkhidmat’s water projects include the installation of water filtration plants, water pumps, handpumps, and gravity flow schemes in rural areas. These efforts have resulted in a reliable supply of clean drinking water and improved community health, particularly in areas facing water scarcity.

Eco-Friendly Sustainable Water Solutions

Alkhidmat,s eco-friendly, cost-effective solution requires minimal maintenance and stands as a sustainable choice for irrigation and beyond.

Alkhidmat is working worldwide in over 10 countries across the globe to ensure that not only do communities have a safe and reliable source of water for today, but for life too.

The Alkhidmat WASH Program has funded more than 17 thousands projects in six Provinces of Pakistan to help more than 6 million people get access to water, hygiene education and improved sanitation.
