Alkhidmat Foundation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (AKF KP) opened a new drug rehabilitation center in Charsadda, to provide medical treatment and rehabilitation services for people struggling with addiction.

The facility aims to treat and rehabilitate individuals suffering from drug addiction through medical care, counseling, and vocational training programs designed to help patients reintegrate into society.

Provincial General Secretary AKF KP Muhammad Shakir Siddiqui, along with Vice Presidents Fida Muhammad Khan and Hafiz Hameedullah Advocate, and Regional Manager AKF KP Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, visited the center to review its operations and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements.

The officials, on the occasion, said that Alkhidmat plans to expand its network of rehabilitation facilities across the province to address the grave issue.

Senior Manager Orphan Care Muhammad Noman Khan, Director Alkhidmat Hospital Charsadda Noor Hussain, District President Saddam Hussain, and Muhammad Jaseem Umarzai were also present on the occasion.

In Pakistan and among other developing nations, reside the unfortunate individuals who almost yearly face dire losses at the hands of Monsoon floods despite their limited ability to deal with natural hazards and climatic distress, all due to grave inattention by the government to basic infrastructure development, inadequate legislations for environmental protection irrespective of the regime, unstable economy with drastic variation in income consumption behavior and uncontrollable variability in weather. In the context of Pakistan with this high risk of natural calamities, our women are far more vulnerable to disasters particularly due to no or less control over ownership of resources as a result of their socially inferior position.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have released in recent reports that nearly 4 million people have been affected since late June, with over 1,000 deaths and hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed by the inundation. Although these figures unfortunately keep rising, we must note that among them are an estimated 1.5 million women of reproductive age, now surviving in makeshift shelters where sanitation and privacy are scarce and face issues like homelessness, lack of financial and nutritional provisions and no access to even the very basic modalities of healthcare.

As the entire nation grapples with the aftermath of the devastating floods of 2025, millions of displaced women face a massively overlooked emergency: the struggle to maintain hygiene and dignity in relief camps and submerged villages. They also go through extreme levels of hardship for protecting their family from health hazards, arranging medicine and meals often covering several miles to obtain water for cooking and washing purposes with oftentimes little choice but to sell their only asset; jewelry in order to somewhat stabilize the status of their disaster-stricken households. This results in progressive physical and mental health decline and the lack of available resources further aggravates it.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Women&rsquo;s needs are frequently ignored from health facilities during disasters, specially in those of reproductive age and unfortunately despite all sorts of modern advancements in technology; those who are menstruating, lactating and pregnant suffer more. While floods wash away homes, crops, and livelihoods, they also disrupt access to very basic health services and hygiene facilities. For women and girls, this creates unique risks; some of which can be summarized into:

<h2>1. Compromised maternal and child health</h2>

Many pregnant women have lost access to antenatal and postnatal care, with rural health centers damaged or unreachable. No healthcare setups to cater for their basic and advanced needs during term, delivery or post-partum.&nbsp;

High incidence of infections like hepatitis, UTIs and chorioamnionitis may complicate several pregnancies and gynecological exams and sterile birth is challenging.&nbsp;

Lactating mothers and infants suffer from limited financial, nutritional, pharmaceutical and vital health resources. Planned parenthood is increasingly out of reach in the current lack of essential tools and counselling services.

<h2>2. Rising risk of different illnesses</h2>

Stagnant water is fueling outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, skin diseases, tick bites, lice and flea infestations, parasitic and non-parasitic infections.&nbsp;

Numerous cases of high-mortality febrile illnesses like malaria and dengue emerge. Communicable diseases like influenza, measles, tuberculosis as well as hepatitis A and E thrive in poor sanitation.&nbsp;

Impossibly high incidence of multitude of diseases outweighs treatability in the face of limited medications and supplies, aggravated by logistical turmoil and domestic financial crises.

<h2>3. Menstrual and other hygiene crises</h2>

Essential amenities for life such as clean water and safe shelter are not available. Without sanitary products or private toilets, many women are forced to wait until dusk or nightfall to relieve themselves outdoors in unsanitary locations.&nbsp;

This hazards exposing them involuntarily to snake and scorpion bites, insect-borne diseases, dermatological rashes, genitourinary infections and unfortunate but ever-looming incidents of physical and sexual harassment.

Humanitarian data highlights that 44% of pregnant women in Pakistan are already anemic. With limited food, poor sanitation, and no privacy, the floods have pushed many into even more dangerous conditions. A mother in a relief camp near Multan described her ordeal;

<var>&ldquo;We have lost our homes and now we have lost our privacy too. Even soap or a sanitary pad feels like a luxury.&quot;</var>

Recognising this urgent need, Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Punjab Health Department has taken action to protect the dignity of displaced women. Alkhidmat Foundation resolutely stands at the forefront of rehabilitation through continued disaster management campaigns and hones focus at the diverse issues faced by female flood victims nationwide where 5,000 Hygiene and Dignity Kits were officially handed over to the Director General Health Services Punjab for distribution in flood-affected districts. The hygiene kit distribution campaign reflects a broader Alkhidmat&ndash;WHO commitment made to ensure we are safeguarding women&rsquo;s dignity and also improving public health standards in emergencies. It also underscores the importance of government partnerships in scaling support to reach the most vulnerable groups and individuals of the affectees and national population.

Despite this ongoing campaign, we must note that aid workers stress that 5,000 kits are only just the beginning. This is proving to be a mere drop in the ocean with millions still affected and without any supplies. Therefore expanding hygiene and sanitation facilities as well as women&rsquo;s healthcare services will be crucial to preventing a secondary health crisis on top of the pre-existing list of endless damages. An affiliate health officer provides the following comment;

But the massive impact of Pakistan floods once again revealed that though disasters strike indiscriminately of gender, the burden of rehabilitation really hits women the hardest. Women’s Hygiene Crisis in the Wake of Pakistan’s 2025 Floods

In an initiative aimed at empowering youth through technology, Alkhidmat Foundation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa North Sunday launched the second phase of the &ldquo;Alkhidmat Bano Qabil Program&rdquo; in the Malakand Division, offering free IT courses to thousands of students.

At the Thana Sports Complex in Malakand, more than 35,000 students, including over 10,000 females, participated in the entry test. The test was held in two sessions to accommodate the overwhelming turnout from Upper Dir, Lower Dir, and Malakand districts. 
The event&rsquo;s chief guest, Chief Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that if the government utilized the capabilities of Pakistani youth effectively, the country could eliminate all foreign debts within the next five to ten years through the IT sector alone. 
He announced that Alkhidmat plans to train two million young people in IT skills within the next two years, doubling its earlier target of one million, in response to the remarkable enthusiasm shown by students nationwide.

Highlighting Pakistan&rsquo;s potential in the global tech market, he said that &ldquo;Our IT exports stand at only $3.5 billion, while with proper government focus, they can easily reach $15 billion.&rdquo; 
He criticized the country&rsquo;s long-standing class-based education system, arguing that decades of neglect have left public schools in poor condition. &ldquo;Education has never been a priority for our rulers. From the beginning, a dual education system has been imposed on the nation, widening inequality and holding back progress,&rdquo; he said.

Hafiz Naeem called on the provincial government to invest in youth and education instead of selling university lands. &ldquo;The new Chief Minister should increase the education budget, bring out-of-school children back to classrooms, and restore closed or dilapidated schools,&rdquo; he urged. 
He also advocated for a unified education system with &ldquo;one curriculum, one system, one language,&rdquo; which he said could help stabilize both the education sector and the country at large.

35,000 Students Join Alkhidmat Bano Qabil Phase II Entry Test in Malakand

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan held its annual General Council meeting in Lahore, bringing together chapters from across the country to review regional performance and outline future plans.

At the gathering, Alkhidmat Foundation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received a special recognition award for its tireless efforts during the devastating floods of 2025. The team&rsquo;s swift response, commitment, and service to affected families were highlighted as one of the most outstanding contributions to Alkhidmat&rsquo;s humanitarian mission.

The award was presented to Regional Manager AKF KP Dr. Shakeel Ahmad by the chairman of Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan&rsquo;s Disaster Management Department.

Officials from both Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan and Alkhidmat Foundation South Punjab praised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa volunteers for standing shoulder to shoulder with communities in crisis.

Speakers at the meeting noted that the dedication of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team reflects the true spirit of Alkhidmat&rsquo;s mission.

The General Council meeting also included presentations of annual performance reports from all regional offices, showcasing initiatives in health, education, disaster management, and social services. Still, it was the recognition of Alkhidmat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa&rsquo;s flood relief work that drew particular applause, underscoring the vital role of volunteers in times of national hardship.

Alkhidmat Foundation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Honored for Flood Relief Efforts

Around the world non-governmental organizations are pushing back against a familiar squeeze: more people needing help, little stable funds to meet that need. Wars, climate disasters, economic turbulence, all have converged to stretch NGOs past endurance.

Recent inflation has driven up costs for food, fuel, logistics and staffing. Donors, especially in developed nations, are grappling with high domestic budgets and competing priorities. Meanwhile, crises proliferate: millions displaced by floods, conflict, disease, or wars. NGOs face three kinds of pressure: operational (how to deliver aid), financial (how to pay for it), and reputational (how to show meaningful impact amid complexity).

Some of the biggest NGOs are warning of budget cuts, project delays, scaling down of programs, or outright shutting down in areas where they&rsquo;ve long worked. Local organizations are particularly exposed: they often lack large reserve funds, depend heavily on unpredictable public donations, and operate in places where crises hit hardest.

Alkhidmat Foundation, one of Pakistan&rsquo;s largest nonprofit relief and welfare networks, embodies both the promise of local action and the weight of rising expectations. Its mission spans health, education, orphan care, disaster management, microfinance, clean water, and responses to crises beyond Pakistan&rsquo;s borders.

Now the question is where the challenges lie? Pakistan&rsquo;s inflation remains high; food, transport, fuel costs have all gone up. For Alkhidmat, that means the cost of basic supplies, logistics, and maintaining health-and relief centers has risen significantly. More funds are needed just to maintain existing programs, less left for expansion or unforeseen emergencies.

With multiple crises globally (e.g. Gaza, climate disasters), donor attention is split. Even where generosity remains, donors are more cautious, demanding quicker results, or preferring specific causes. That can force NGOs toward more restricted grants rather than general funds that allow flexibility.

Flooding, cloudbursts, earthquakes are arriving more often and with more severity. Alkhidmat has had to mobilize relief in multiple provinces (Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir) following major monsoon rains since mid-2025. Rapid shifts in where help is needed make planning and budgeting much harder.

Alkhidmat&rsquo;s mission is broad: not just emergencies but education, health, orphan care, microfinance, water. Broad missions make it harder to maintain quality everywhere when resources are thin.

Remote and flood-affected regions often lack infrastructure or are cut off by damaged roads. Transporting relief goods becomes expensive. Medical and disaster relief operations carry extra costs for mobile clinics, temporary shelters, water supply etc.

Recent Specific Challenges for Alkhidmat 
Even as Alkhidmat raises significant sums but there is still a gap between what is pledged and what is needed, especially for large-scale relief operations.

Flood disasters in 2025 have cost huge amounts but rehabilitation (rebuilding homes, infrastructure, agriculture) may cost much more, over longer time-frames. 
Multiple simultaneous crises increase stretch: Gaza aid, Afghanistan earthquake aid, flood relief, Pakistan&rsquo;s own domestic disasters compete for the same donor base and logistics capacity. Maintaining services like hospitals, medical centers, or education in non-crisis times also demand steady funding. When donors shift to emergency relief, these regular services somehow suffer.

What Must Change or Has to 
More predictable funding: unrestricted grants or multi-year commitments help organizations absorb shocks. 
Local organizations need stronger logistics, supply chain, transport agility. Prepositioned stocks help. 
Partnerships between international donors and local NGOs must increase; local NGOs are on the ground and often faster to respond. 
Better financial planning and risk management: managing inflation risk, delayed grants, seasonal variances. 
In sum, the challenge for NGOs in general is how to balance rising demand and complexity with shrinking &ldquo;breathing room&rdquo; in finances and operations. Alkhidmat Foundation is a strong example of both the capacity and the fragility of the local nonprofit response. It delivers at scale, in multiple dimensions, but is also exposed: its breadth of mission and multiplicity of crises require matching scale in sustainable funding, operational strength, and strategic focus.
