A Palestinian statistics reports that over 39,000 children have lost one or both parents in Gaza.
Among this figure, 17’000 children have been deprived of both parents since October 2023, when Israel; launched its genocidal offensive.
Israel has sealed vital border crossings – prohibiting the entry of much needed humanitarian aid, including flour, fuel, and medical supplies into the strip. According to Gaza’s ministry of health, at least 50,523 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, most of them women and children.
Israel kills a child in Gaza every 45 minutes.
Many of the surviving children have endured the trauma of multiple wars, and all of them have spent their lives under the oppressive shadow of an Israeli blockade, affecting every aspect of their existence from birth.
On March 18, Israeli forces launched 100 simultaneous strikes across the Gaza Strip, shattering a two-month-old ceasefire with Hamas.
About half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents are children. Of every 100 children; 2 children are killed, 2 are presumed dead, 3 have been wounded, 5 separated from their parents or orphaned, 5 facing malnutrition.
On January 29, 2024, Hind, five, bright and kind hearted child, found herself the only survivor in a blood-soaked car filled with the bodies of her family who were targeted by an Israeli tank as they tried to flee Israeli bombardment, Hind In her final moments managed to call Palestine Red Crescent Society.
I am so scared, please come please send someone to take me. Israel blocked emergency service reaching her and her body was discovered 12 days later alongside those of her family.
The stories of children like Hind reflect the countless childhood stolen in Gaza, leaving behind memories of innocence and futures that will never be realized.
The Israeli occupation “continues to target children through systematic crimes, including using them as human shields, depriving them of education, and attempting to sever their national identity in the occupied territories of 1948 through manipulation of curricula, the spread of crime, and the destruction of values” Hamas
On Palestinian Children’s Day, UNRWA states around 1.9 million people – including thousands of children – have gone through repeated forced displacement amid bombardment, fear, and loss since the war in Gaza started.
Gaza's Healthcare Crisis
Gaza’s healthcare system has been left struggling to survive and provide the minimal level of medical services for the surging numbers of casualties arriving to the hospitals, and for also ensuring the stability of the medical service due to the chronic shortages of all essential medical supplies as the Israeli blockade continues.
Many Palestinians now fear dying of thirst before being killed in the continuing bombardment. Last week, Israel bombed and destroyed one of Gaza’s only operational water desalination plants still supplying clean drinking water to the Strip.
Israel Stopping Food and Medicine From Reaching Gaza
The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has accused Israeli authorities of obstructing humanitarian access to northern Gaza. In the first three weeks of June, 36 trucks carrying aid — which were facilitated by Israel — were allowed to reach Gaza, while another 35 were either denied access, impeded or canceled due to logistical, operational or security reasons.
In summary, the conflict has left a generation of children orphaned and traumatized, requiring immediate and sustained international attention and aid to ensure their protection and well-being.
International pressure is the only way to halt Israel’s devastation of Gaza
When people around the world protest, sign petitions, or demand action, it puts pressure on their governments to: reconsider support for parties involved in the conflict. Push for diplomatic solutions, such as ceasefire negotiations through the UN or regional coalitions. Suspend arms sales or military aid that might be fueling the violence.
➡️ Example: In the past, international protests influenced the US to call for temporary pauses in hostilities to allow humanitarian aid.
In shaping global public opinion, solidarity movements influence how the conflict is framed: They challenge biased narratives in the media. Raise awareness about the humanitarian impact of military actions on civilians. Encourage people to demand ethical foreign policy from their leaders.
➡️ This can lead to governments feeling morally and politically obligated to act, even if they're not directly involved in the conflict.
Widespread solidarity can boost efforts by strengthening international institutions’ role: The UN General Assembly or Human Rights Council, pushing for resolutions that call for ceasefires or investigations. International courts (like the ICJ or ICC), by highlighting possible violations of international law and prompting legal actions.
➡️ Increased visibility helps legitimize international interventions.
Mass movements often encourage influencing economic ties by boycotts, divestments, or sanctions (BDS) that can economically pressure actors involved in the conflict. Companies and financial institutions to rethink partnerships that might be linked to war efforts.
➡️ Economic pressure can make prolonged conflict unsustainable.
Solidarity by empowering local peace efforts amplifies the voices of peace advocates and human rights defenders on the ground. Helps fund NGOs and local initiatives delivering aid or promoting dialogue.
➡️ Gives grassroots peace builders the global backing they need.
