Around the world non-governmental organizations are pushing back against a familiar squeeze: more people needing help, little stable funds to meet that need. Wars, climate disasters, economic turbulence, all have converged to stretch NGOs past endurance.

Recent inflation has driven up costs for food, fuel, logistics and staffing. Donors, especially in developed nations, are grappling with high domestic budgets and competing priorities. Meanwhile, crises proliferate: millions displaced by floods, conflict, disease, or wars. NGOs face three kinds of pressure: operational (how to deliver aid), financial (how to pay for it), and reputational (how to show meaningful impact amid complexity).

Some of the biggest NGOs are warning of budget cuts, project delays, scaling down of programs, or outright shutting down in areas where they&rsquo;ve long worked. Local organizations are particularly exposed: they often lack large reserve funds, depend heavily on unpredictable public donations, and operate in places where crises hit hardest.

Alkhidmat Foundation, one of Pakistan&rsquo;s largest nonprofit relief and welfare networks, embodies both the promise of local action and the weight of rising expectations. Its mission spans health, education, orphan care, disaster management, microfinance, clean water, and responses to crises beyond Pakistan&rsquo;s borders.

Now the question is where the challenges lie? Pakistan&rsquo;s inflation remains high; food, transport, fuel costs have all gone up. For Alkhidmat, that means the cost of basic supplies, logistics, and maintaining health-and relief centers has risen significantly. More funds are needed just to maintain existing programs, less left for expansion or unforeseen emergencies.

With multiple crises globally (e.g. Gaza, climate disasters), donor attention is split. Even where generosity remains, donors are more cautious, demanding quicker results, or preferring specific causes. That can force NGOs toward more restricted grants rather than general funds that allow flexibility.

Flooding, cloudbursts, earthquakes are arriving more often and with more severity. Alkhidmat has had to mobilize relief in multiple provinces (Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir) following major monsoon rains since mid-2025. Rapid shifts in where help is needed make planning and budgeting much harder.

Alkhidmat&rsquo;s mission is broad: not just emergencies but education, health, orphan care, microfinance, water. Broad missions make it harder to maintain quality everywhere when resources are thin.

Remote and flood-affected regions often lack infrastructure or are cut off by damaged roads. Transporting relief goods becomes expensive. Medical and disaster relief operations carry extra costs for mobile clinics, temporary shelters, water supply etc.

Recent Specific Challenges for Alkhidmat 
Even as Alkhidmat raises significant sums but there is still a gap between what is pledged and what is needed, especially for large-scale relief operations.

Flood disasters in 2025 have cost huge amounts but rehabilitation (rebuilding homes, infrastructure, agriculture) may cost much more, over longer time-frames. 
Multiple simultaneous crises increase stretch: Gaza aid, Afghanistan earthquake aid, flood relief, Pakistan&rsquo;s own domestic disasters compete for the same donor base and logistics capacity. Maintaining services like hospitals, medical centers, or education in non-crisis times also demand steady funding. When donors shift to emergency relief, these regular services somehow suffer.

What Must Change or Has to 
More predictable funding: unrestricted grants or multi-year commitments help organizations absorb shocks. 
Local organizations need stronger logistics, supply chain, transport agility. Prepositioned stocks help. 
Partnerships between international donors and local NGOs must increase; local NGOs are on the ground and often faster to respond. 
Better financial planning and risk management: managing inflation risk, delayed grants, seasonal variances. 
In sum, the challenge for NGOs in general is how to balance rising demand and complexity with shrinking &ldquo;breathing room&rdquo; in finances and operations. Alkhidmat Foundation is a strong example of both the capacity and the fragility of the local nonprofit response. It delivers at scale, in multiple dimensions, but is also exposed: its breadth of mission and multiplicity of crises require matching scale in sustainable funding, operational strength, and strategic focus.

Nonprofits Under Pressure: Rising Need Meets Tight Resources

The date October 8, 2005 is etched into the collective memory of Pakistan. A day the earth shook with brutal force, claiming tens of thousands of lives and leaving countless more bereft. For a nation that has endured repeated and devastating crises from the floods of 2010 to the scourge of terrorism, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate-fueled deluges of 2022 and 2025, the memory of that earthquake serves as a constant reminder of fragility. Yet in those darkest moments emerges another memory: of hands reaching out, of hope delivered, of an organization that brings order to chaos. This is the story of Alkhidmat.

But the story is more than relief. Pakistan today is engaged in a battle against a harsh climate reality. The 2022 floods alone displaced millions, destroyed over 2 million homes, and caused economic losses estimated between US$30&ndash;40 billion. In 2025, flood disasters have already displaced over 5.8 million people, claimed hundreds of lives, and wrecked infrastructure, agriculture, and shelter. The monsoon deluge of 2025 was made 10-15% more intense by global warming. Many deaths still go uncounted, with estimates suggesting as much as 95% of mortality remains unregistered. In this context, Alkhidmat&rsquo;s dual role takes shape: rapid response, and persistent care.

Its response has always been swift. When bomb blasts rip through cities, Alkhidmat volunteers race in to offer aid and support. In the COVID-19 crisis, the foundation mobilized quickly, running quarantine centers, sanitizing public spaces, distributing oxygen, and delivering food. In floodwaters and mud, they rescue, distribute shelter, food, clean water, and first aid. But relief is never just a stopgap.

For Alkhidmat, &ldquo;relief&rdquo; is a profound act of human dignity: a blanket for a shivering mother, a meal for a hungry child, hygiene kits to restore normalcy. After the immediate crisis, the more arduous work of rehabilitation begins. That means rebuilding homes, establishing medical camps and temporary schools, even restoring livelihoods with interest-free loans and microfinance schemes. All this is built upon a vast corps of volunteers, over 69,000 volunteers, who take on exhaustion, heartbreak, danger, and despair with resolve.

But Alkhidmat&rsquo;s mission is not limited to emergency times. It is woven into everyday social welfare across Pakistan.

Disaster Management - Rescue, Relief &amp; Rehabilitation: Alkhidmat is often among the first responders in earthquakes, floods, bomb blasts, and health emergencies. 
Health Services: The foundation runs hospitals, clinics, and mobile health units to deliver primary health, emergency care, and preventive services. 
Education: Temporary schools in disaster zones, scholarships, and regular schooling initiatives. Orphan Care Program: Alkhidmat supports tens of thousands of orphans. Its network sponsors over 30,000 orphaned children, with monthly support. 
WASH: Provision of clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, hygiene kits, especially under crisis conditions. 
Microfinance): To empower vulnerable families and promote self-dependency. 
Community Services: Poverty alleviation, livelihood support, capacity building in local communities.

These multiple domains allow Alkhidmat to not just respond to disasters but help communities resist, recover, and rebuild.

Alkhidmat: A Hope in Every Disaster

Lahore, September 27, 2025 Alkhidmat Foundation organized a major relief event at Kasur Ganda Singh Wala, where refreshments were served to 2,000 affected individuals, lunch was arranged, and one-month food rations were distributed among flood-affected families.

&nbsp;

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary General of Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan,&nbsp;Syed Waqas Jafri, said that the River Sutlej had inundated several villages in Kasur, where Alkhidmat officials and volunteers played a vital role in rescuing the affected people and relocating them to safe areas. He added that tent villages were established at various locations in Punjab, where volunteers actively hosted and assisted displaced families.

&nbsp;

He stated:&nbsp;&ldquo;The volunteers who served tirelessly, both in the darkness of night and the light of day, and the donors who devoted their wealth for the cause, are all true heroes of humanity. Without these heroes, it would not have been possible for Alkhidmat to extend such wide-ranging services. We are grateful to them and pray to Almighty Allah for their immense reward.&quot;

Mr. Jafri further said that with the floodwaters now receding, families would gradually rebuild their homes, reclaim their fertile lands, and return to normal life.&nbsp;&ldquo;Today, we are bidding farewell to these 2,000 families with one month food rations, essential supplies, and our prayers. Alkhidmat will continue to stand by them in every possible way during their rehabilitation journey,&rdquo;&nbsp;he added.

The event was also attended by&nbsp;Muhammad Javed Kasuri, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Central Punjab,&nbsp;Ikramul Haq Subhani, President Alkhidmat Central Punjab, along with local officials.

Highlighting the dedication of Alkhidmat volunteers across the country, Mr. Jafri noted:&nbsp;&ldquo;From Khyber to Karachi, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit, our volunteers have set new examples of service. In Buner, our volunteer Zahoor sacrificed his life while rescuing flood victims. Another volunteer, Ismail, was critically injured during relief activities and is currently on a ventilator, while Malik Hamid was severely injured while delivering food to affected areas. These are our real heroes, who continue to serve humanity without caring for their own lives.&rdquo;

Alkhidmat Delivers Food to 2,000 Flood Hit Families in Kasur

<h1 data-end="283" data-start="221">Nationwide Relief Operations Continue as Alkhidmat Reaches Thousands of Flood Victims</h1>

Lahore, September 23, 2025&nbsp;Alkhidmat Foundation has so far spent&nbsp;Rs1.10 billion&nbsp;on relief and rehabilitation activities for flood-affected communities across Pakistan, said&nbsp;Prof. Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman, President of Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, while presiding over a review meeting of the ongoing Flood Rescue and Relief Operation.

&nbsp;

CEO&nbsp;briefed participants on Alkhidmat&rsquo;s humanitarian efforts in 58 districts. Prof.&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Hafeez ur Rehman&nbsp;noted that in the first phase, only a few districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Azad Kashmir were affected. However, following cloudbursts, heavy rains, and river flooding after August 15, large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and other regions came under severe impact.

&nbsp;

He added that within hours of the August 15 emergency meeting, Alkhidmat volunteers launched rescue operations that have now continued for more than 40 days. During this period,&nbsp;16,421 volunteers&nbsp;conducted&nbsp;2,161 emergency rescue operations&nbsp;using&nbsp;31 boats&nbsp;and&nbsp;130 machinery units, safely relocating&nbsp;38,606 people&nbsp;to safer places.

&nbsp;

So far, the foundation has distributed&nbsp;424,051 cooked food boxes&nbsp;and provided&nbsp;monthly ration packages to 44,695 families. Fifteen tent villages were established, accommodating&nbsp;16,327 individuals&nbsp;with access to food, clean water, healthcare, schooling, play areas for children, and in some cases mosques and libraries.

&nbsp;

In the health sector, Alkhidmat deployed&nbsp;eight mobile health units, set up&nbsp;767 medical camps, and operated&nbsp;60 ambulances, benefiting nearly&nbsp;200,000 patients and injured persons.

&nbsp;

Prof. Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman&nbsp;said that with local infrastructure, sewerage systems, and water supply lines destroyed in many areas, Alkhidmat&rsquo;s&nbsp;WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)&nbsp;programme had distributed&nbsp;359,984 water bottles, 4,776 hygiene kits, 4,023 dignity kits, 811 water tanks, and 3,869 jerry cans. Twelve mobile filtration plants continue to provide clean drinking water to affected populations.

&nbsp;

He further added that beyond human needs, Alkhidmat also arranged fodder for livestock, supplying&nbsp;128 truckloads of feed&nbsp;in flood hit areas.

Alkhidmat Foundation Spends Rs1.10 Billion on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Across Pakistan

<h1 dir="ltr">A Day That Shook a Nation</h1>

On the morning of 8th October 2005, life changed forever for millions of people in northern Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. At 8:50 a.m., a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck with terrifying force. Within minutes, thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals collapsed. Families were buried under rubble, children lost their classrooms, and entire towns like Balakot and Bagh were wiped out.

The human loss was heartbreaking:

<h2 dir="ltr">Why Was the Destruction So Severe?</h2>

The earthquake&rsquo;s epicenter was near Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu &amp; Kashmir, about 15 km deep in the earth. The tremors lasted less than a minute, but poor building structures and the mountainous terrain turned it into a catastrophe.

The scale of the disaster drew global attention. Pakistan declared an emergency, and help poured in from across the world. International agencies sent helicopters, medical teams, and relief goods. Donors funded the rebuilding of schools, hospitals, and bridges. But in those first few days, when every minute meant saving lives, it was local volunteers, civil society, and community groups who were the first to act.
