The Islamic calendar holds many special occasions, but few compare to the profound significance of the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) swears an oath by these first 10 days, as told in Surah Al-Fajr saying:
“By the dawn and by the ten nights,” Quran 89:1-2
As the Creator of the universe and beyond, Allah (SWT) only swears an oath by something that holds immense significance and benefit for us as His creations. This reflects the Divine Knowledge and Wisdom of Allah (SWT).
This sacred period, culminating in Eid al-Adha, offers a unique opportunity to multiply good deeds, seek forgiveness, and deepen our connection with Allah (SWT). Let's explore the importance of these days as highlighted in the Quran and Hadith and also the significant acts of worship to perform.
Dhul Hijjah: The 10 best days
In the Quran and Hadith
- Scholars agree that the "10 Nights" mentioned refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also emphasized their importance:
"There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days" (Sahih Bukhari).
- Dhul Hujj and The Day Of Arafah
“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” Quran 5:3
- If Muslims are unable to fast the whole 9 days of Dhul Hijjah, they should try their best to fast on the 9th day- Yawm al-Arafah (the Day of Arafah), on which Allah perfected His Religion. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Fasting the day of `Arafah expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming one.” Sahi Muslim
Significant Events During These Days
Several pivotal events in Islamic history are believed to have occurred during these ten days:
- The completion of the Kaaba's foundation by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
- The preparation for the Hajj pilgrimage by millions of Muslims worldwide.
- The Day of Arafah, which is the most significant day of Hajj and a day of immense mercy and forgiveness.
Things to Do in the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah
1. Qurbani (Udhiya/Sacrifice)
The act of Qurbani (sacrifice) commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah’s command. It is a Sunnah Mu'akkadah (highly recommended practice) to offer a sacrifice and distribute the meat among the poor, family, and friends.
2. Fasting in Dhul Hijjah
Fasting during the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, especially on the Day of Arafah, holds great merit. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year" (Muslim).
3. Increased Worship and Remembrance of Allah
Engaging in additional prayers, reading the Quran, making Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and seeking forgiveness are highly encouraged. Saying "Subhanallah," "Alhamdulillah," "La ilaha illallah," and "Allahu Akbar" frequently is particularly beneficial during these days.
4. Charity and Good Deeds
Giving charity and performing good deeds during these days are immensely rewarding. This includes helping those in need, feeding the hungry, and contributing to community projects.
5. Performing Hajj
For those who have the means, performing Hajj during these days is one of the five pillars of Islam and holds unparalleled spiritual significance.
Important Deeds According to Sunnah
1. Maintaining Family Ties
The Prophet (PBUH) placed great emphasis on maintaining good relationships with family members. Visiting relatives, resolving disputes, and showing kindness are highly encouraged.
2. Seeking Forgiveness and Repentance
These days are an excellent opportunity for Muslims to seek forgiveness for past sins and make sincere repentance.
3. Enhancing Personal Conduct
Improving one’s character and conduct, such as being honest, patient, and humble, aligns with the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) and earns great reward.
The Virtue of Donating During Fasting
Combining fasting with charity amplifies the reward. When Muslims fast and simultaneously donate to those in need, it multiplies the blessings. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The best charity is that given in Ramadhan" (Tirmidhi), and by extension, giving charity in the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah can be seen as similarly blessed.
Conclusion
The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah offer a unique and blessed opportunity for Muslims to draw closer to Allah, seek His mercy, and earn immense rewards. By engaging in acts of worship, performing good deeds, and following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Muslims can make the most of this sacred period. Let’s strive to maximize our efforts and reap the benefits of these precious days in 2024.
Qurabani/Udhiya is a highly encouraged act for every Muslim who is financially able to do so. It can be done so through a certified charity, such as Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, with specific Qurbani packages.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to make the most of these blessed days.
