Afghanistan Earthquake Emergency

Current Situation

A devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan last night, killing at least 1000 people. An estimated 2000 were reported injured. Hundreds of homes have been completely destroyed leaving thousands of people displaced under the open sky. Many people were asleep when the earthquake struck. Other critical infrastructure such as roads and power supplies have also been badly damaged.

As per Afghanistan Interior Ministry official statement, the quake was Afghanistan’s deadliest in two decades, and the death toll is likely to rise over the coming days. Most of the confirmed deaths were in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika, where 255 people had been killed and more than 200 injured. In another province Khost, 25 people were killed and 90 taken to hospital in critical condition.

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan disaster response teams are on the ground in eastern Afghanistan including Paktika and other worst affected hard-to-go-remote areas, and have started relief activities including providing emergency trauma care, local health workers assistance, food aid, non-food items, emergency shelter, and support for water and sanitation.
