Muslim NGOs from seven countries, namely Pakistan, India, Egypt, Sudan, Turkey, Malaysia, and Indonesia participated in the conference. AlKhidmat Vice President, Dr. Iqbal Khalil, and Secretary General, Mohammed Abdus Shakoor, represented Pakistan at the conference. Dr Iqbal Khalil presented a paper on natural disasters and their management in Pakistan, while Mr. Abdus Shakoor briefed the participants about AlKhidmat’s activities and its vision for the future.
IFRD is an international umbrella organization which coordinates relief and rehabilitation activities, anywhere in the world, especially in Muslim countries. The conference was hosted by CANSUYU, a Turkish welfare and development organization which actively participated in rescue and relief activities in Pakistan during the 2005 earthquake and the 2010 and 2011 floods.
The conference adopted some major decisions regarding future cooperation between these organizations, including capacity building and developing a framework for quick responses in the event of a catastrophe in any country. The delegates proposed that the next IFRD executive body meeting be held in Lahore in November 2012.
The Pakistani delegation is currently on a study tour of various Turkish cities and will return to Pakistan on May 06, 2012.
