Nowshehra – April 23, 2012, Al-Khidmat President, Dr Hafeez-ur-Rahman, visited Jalozai camp near Nowshehra here today. The camp has not only been a home for hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees for decades, but of late it has…
also become a shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Pakistan’s strife torn northern areas. More than 150,000 IDPs have arrived at the camp due to the military operation initiated in the northern areas since March 17, 2012, while thousands already remain as a result of previous military operations.
Al-Khidmat President was informed that AlKhidmat had initiated a parallel registration process to speed up the delivery of food and shelter to new arrivals because the government’s registration process was extremely lengthy and tedious and it takes several weeks before refugees who arrive at the camp are issued a ration card and are able to receive food and shelter. He was informed that AlKhidmat had already registered 5,500 IDPs at the camp. Food packets had been distributed among 1290 persons, while clothes had been handed out to 3,800 families, and blankets had been distributed among 600 families.
Dr Hafeez-ur-Rahman said AlKhidmat would continue serving inhabitants of the camp until the last person there has been rehabilitated to his, or her, home. He also met with local elders and members of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in order to solicit their help in organizing and speeding up the relief process.
